A Change of Seasons (EP)

A Change of Seasons is a 1995 EP by progressive metal band Dream Theater. Other than Live at the Marquee, this is the only EP release by Dream Theater. It comprises the 23-minute title track and a collection of bonus live covers performed at a fan club concert at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London, England. The title track includes samples from the film Dead Poets Society. The lyrics are about the death of Mike Portnoy's mother. Also, this is the first Dream Theater release featuring Derek Sherinian on keyboards.

An edited version of the title track was used in a downhill skiing feature during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Note that this is considered an EP only in name - it is actually over 50 minutes in length, which is much longer than a standard EP, and longer than many LPs as well. The EP itself is actually longer than Dream Theater's own first two studio albums. (Quoted from Wikipedia)

Awake (1994)

Eager to work on fresh material, Dream Theater retreated to the studio in May 1994. Awake, Dream Theater's third studio album, was released in October 1994 in a hail of controversy among fans. Shortly before the album was mixed, Moore announced to the rest of the band that he wished to concentrate on his own musical interests and would be quitting Dream Theater. Moore was simply no longer interested in touring, nor did he favor the style of music Dream Theater performed. As a result, the band had to scramble to find a replacement keyboardist before a tour could be considered.

Jens Johansson, who would go on to become a member of Stratovarius, was among the biggest names to audition; however, the band members were eager to fill the position with keyboardist Jordan Rudess. Portnoy and Petrucci had come across Rudess in Keyboard Magazine, where he was recognized as "best new talent" in the reader's poll. The two invited him to play a trial gig with the band at the Concrete Foundations Forum in Burbank, CA. For the members of Dream Theater, the show went incredibly well, and Rudess was asked to fill the keyboardist position permanently; however, Rudess opted to tour with The Dixie Dregs instead since it granted him more personal latitude. Disappointed, Dream Theater hired fellow Berklee alumnus Derek Sherinian, whose previous work included stints with Alice Cooper and Kiss, to fill in for the Awake promotional tour. By the conclusion of the tour, the band decided to take Sherinian on as Moore's full-time replacement. (Quoted from Wikipedia)

Images and Words is the second studio album by influential American progressive metal band Dream Theater, released in 1992. It was recorded in late 1991 at BearTracks Studios in New York City. The album is the first album to feature James LaBrie on vocals. The album maintains its position as the band's most commercially successful album to date[citation needed], and the song Pull Me Under's status as the only Top 10 hit the band has ever had. Many critics and fans cite this album as a landmark release for the progressive metal genre.

Images and Words has garnered overwhelmingly positive critical and fan acclaim. As of July 5, 2008, heavy metal database The Metal Archives ranks Images and Words as Dream Theater's second best album with a 92% rating based on 11 fan reviews. Murat Batmaz of the popular progressive rock/metal review website Sea of Tranquility awarded the record a perfect score, calling it a "masterpiece" and "the most important Dream Theater album, ever".

Images and Words is currently ranked #2 on Digital Dream Door's list of the top 100 progressive metal albums of all time.

With this stability, Dream Theater concentrated on writing more material while playing more concerts in New York and in neighboring states. This eventually attracted the attention of Mechanic Records, a division of MCA. Dream Theater signed their first record contract with Mechanic on June 23, 1988 and set out to record their debut album.

When Dream and Day Unite was released in 1989 to far less fanfare than the band had anticipated. Mechanic ended up breaking the majority of the financial promises they had made to Dream Theater prior to signing their contract, so the band was restricted to playing around New York City. The promotional tour for the album consisted of just five concerts, all of which were relatively local. Their first show was at Sundance in Bay Shore, New York opening for the classic rock power trio Zebra.

After the fourth show, Dominici was fired because of personal and creative differences. Shortly after, however, the band Marillion asked Dream Theater to open for them at a gig at the Ritz in New York, so Dominici was given the opportunity to perform one last time. It would be another two years before Dream Theater had a replacement vocalist.(Quoted from wikipedia)

Dream Theater was one of the groups progressive metal was most foremost in the world at this time. Established by Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci and John Myung, they released eight studio albums, four recorders live and one short album (EP). Their first album, When Dream And Day Unite was recorded with Charlie Dominici as the vocalist and Kevin Moore as the player keyboards. Dominici aged far more older than the other member and wanted to play other music, so as he afterwards left the group. They afterwards looked for the replacement who was ideal while 2 years to the end met James LaBrie, the vocalist from Canada through the audition.

Together LaBrie they recorded Images And Words that threw their name to the international rank with the "Pull Me Under" hit and "Another Day". Awake was their last album with Moore that afterwards was replaced by Derek Sherinian for the Falling Into Infinity album. In the long run Sherinian was also replaced by Jordan Rudess and this formation still remains up until today. They launched the concept album of the Metropolis 2: Scenes From A Memory and the dual Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence album. During 2003 they decided to record the Train Of Thought non-concept album that really was affected by the group thrash metal like Metallica.

Their newest album that was entitled Octavarium was issued on June 7 2005 and apart from being the eighth studio album also contained eight songs.

After Dream Theater launched their Live album in commemorated 20 Dream Theater years were formed that was entitled Score that was recorded on April 1 2006 in Radio City music Hall,US. they again were ready to launch the album to their nine by carrying the label flag record just that is RoadRunner Records, they completed the Systematic Chaos album that contained 8 songs and will be launched on June 5 2007 in the US.

The Dream Theater history

Dream Theater was formed in September 1985 when guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung decided to form a band in their spare time while studying at the Berklee College of Music. The pair came across drummer Mike Portnoy in one of Berklee's rehearsal rooms, where he was asked to join the band. The trio started off by covering Iron Maiden and Rush songs in the rehearsal rooms at Berklee.

Myung, Petrucci, and Portnoy settled on the name Majesty for their newly formed group. According to the The Score So Far… documentary, they were waiting in line for tickets to a Rush concert at the Berklee Performance Center while listening to the band on a boom box. Portnoy commented that the ending of the song "Bastille Day" (from the album Caress of Steel) sounded "majestic." It was then decided that Majesty would be the band's name [4].

The trio then set out to fill the remaining positions in the group. Petrucci asked his high school band-mate Kevin Moore to play keyboards. After accepting the position, another friend from home, Chris Collins, was recruited as lead vocalist after band members heard him sing a cover of "Queen of the Reich" by Queensrÿche[5] During this time, Portnoy, Petrucci and Myung's hectic schedules forced them to abandon their studies to concentrate on their music, as they did not feel they could learn more in College. Moore also left his college, SUNY Fredonia, to concentrate on the band. (Quoted from wikipedia)
