Dream Theater - Once in a LIVEtime (Live album, 1998)

Genre: Progressive metal
Released: October 27 1998
Covers and Tributes
Dream Theater have often placed riffs or parts of other band's songs into their songs when playing live. On this album, there are several examples of this.
- Before the beginning of "Trial of Tears", John Petrucci plays the famous five tone motif from the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
- The opening of "Trial of Tears" also contains portions of the Rush songs "Xanadu" and "The Trees".
- "Peruvian Skies" contains portions of Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar" and Metallica's "Enter Sandman".
- The end of "Take the Time" contains the outro solo from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" and the guitar riff from Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick".
- John Petrucci's guitar solo is composed almost entirely of Liquid Tension Experiment's "Acid Rain" and parts of "Paradigm Shift". It also contains a portion of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" and The Godfather's Tarantella. The segue from "Just Let Me Breathe" into "Voices" features John Petrucci playing the first half of the Force Theme from "Star Wars".

Falling into Infinity is the fourth studio album by influential American progressive metal band Dream Theater, released in 1997. It was recorded in 1997 at Avatar Studios in New York, a return from their previous album, which was recorded in England. It continued the more progressive metal sound Awake started, but to much less critical and commercial acclaim. It is also the last studio album to feature keyboardist Derek Sherinian. LaBrie's limited vocal range after rupturing his vocal cords is shown on the album, with most of the vocals being in the lower range, in contrast to earlier releases, which were often high-pitched.
History
Despite Awake's relative success, the band was not quite happy with its darker sound, which resulted in the band going back to New York to record their new album. The record label pressured the band to write a more commercial album, much to the band's dismay. It was originally intended to be a 140-minute double album, but the record label refused to release such an album and even recruited Desmond Child to help the band re-write "You Not Me", which was originally titled "You Or Me", to make it more commercial.
Unhappy with the record label's meddling, this would be the last album to feature a traditional producer. Later albums would be produced from within due to the band's unhappy result of Falling Into Infinity. The album is also only one of the few Dream Theater albums to not feature the band's iconic font, as a result of graphic artist Storm Thorgeson's refusal to work with fonts other artists had made.[citation needed] The only other Dream Theater album to contain a different font is their debut When Dream and Day Unite.

A Change of Seasons (EP)
A Change of Seasons is a 1995 EP by progressive metal band Dream Theater. Other than Live at the Marquee, this is the only EP release by Dream Theater. It comprises the 23-minute title track and a collection of bonus live covers performed at a fan club concert at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London, England. The title track includes samples from the film Dead Poets Society. The lyrics are about the death of Mike Portnoy's mother. Also, this is the first Dream Theater release featuring Derek Sherinian on keyboards.
An edited version of the title track was used in a downhill skiing feature during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
Note that this is considered an EP only in name - it is actually over 50 minutes in length, which is much longer than a standard EP, and longer than many LPs as well. The EP itself is actually longer than Dream Theater's own first two studio albums. (Quoted from Wikipedia)

Awake (1994)
Eager to work on fresh material, Dream Theater retreated to the studio in May 1994. Awake, Dream Theater's third studio album, was released in October 1994 in a hail of controversy among fans. Shortly before the album was mixed, Moore announced to the rest of the band that he wished to concentrate on his own musical interests and would be quitting Dream Theater. Moore was simply no longer interested in touring, nor did he favor the style of music Dream Theater performed. As a result, the band had to scramble to find a replacement keyboardist before a tour could be considered.
Jens Johansson, who would go on to become a member of Stratovarius, was among the biggest names to audition; however, the band members were eager to fill the position with keyboardist Jordan Rudess. Portnoy and Petrucci had come across Rudess in Keyboard Magazine, where he was recognized as "best new talent" in the reader's poll. The two invited him to play a trial gig with the band at the Concrete Foundations Forum in Burbank, CA. For the members of Dream Theater, the show went incredibly well, and Rudess was asked to fill the keyboardist position permanently; however, Rudess opted to tour with The Dixie Dregs instead since it granted him more personal latitude. Disappointed, Dream Theater hired fellow Berklee alumnus Derek Sherinian, whose previous work included stints with Alice Cooper and Kiss, to fill in for the Awake promotional tour. By the conclusion of the tour, the band decided to take Sherinian on as Moore's full-time replacement. (Quoted from Wikipedia)

Images and Words is the second studio album by influential American progressive metal band Dream Theater, released in 1992. It was recorded in late 1991 at BearTracks Studios in New York City. The album is the first album to feature James LaBrie on vocals. The album maintains its position as the band's most commercially successful album to date[citation needed], and the song Pull Me Under's status as the only Top 10 hit the band has ever had. Many critics and fans cite this album as a landmark release for the progressive metal genre.
Images and Words has garnered overwhelmingly positive critical and fan acclaim. As of July 5, 2008, heavy metal database The Metal Archives ranks Images and Words as Dream Theater's second best album with a 92% rating based on 11 fan reviews. Murat Batmaz of the popular progressive rock/metal review website Sea of Tranquility awarded the record a perfect score, calling it a "masterpiece" and "the most important Dream Theater album, ever".
Images and Words is currently ranked #2 on Digital Dream Door's list of the top 100 progressive metal albums of all time.

With this stability, Dream Theater concentrated on writing more material while playing more concerts in New York and in neighboring states. This eventually attracted the attention of Mechanic Records, a division of MCA. Dream Theater signed their first record contract with Mechanic on June 23, 1988 and set out to record their debut album.
When Dream and Day Unite was released in 1989 to far less fanfare than the band had anticipated. Mechanic ended up breaking the majority of the financial promises they had made to Dream Theater prior to signing their contract, so the band was restricted to playing around New York City. The promotional tour for the album consisted of just five concerts, all of which were relatively local. Their first show was at Sundance in Bay Shore, New York opening for the classic rock power trio Zebra.
After the fourth show, Dominici was fired because of personal and creative differences. Shortly after, however, the band Marillion asked Dream Theater to open for them at a gig at the Ritz in New York, so Dominici was given the opportunity to perform one last time. It would be another two years before Dream Theater had a replacement vocalist.(Quoted from wikipedia)
